Historical Interpreting

I am also an historian, which has led me to develop a style of performance called "Historical Interpretation" that aims to present historical characters with educated realism, improvising around well researched themes and scenarios. This enables the portrayal of these characters in historic settings such as heritage properties, museums, tourism events, as well as for film and TV.

In 1989, I became one of the first to join the actors’ company at the Museum of the Moving Image (MOMI, a part of the British Film Institute), whose innovation was to be the first museum to be designed to incorporate actors to 'interpret' the exhibits.

A particular speciality of mine, utilised by MOMI, was as a Magic Lantern Showman, both on the museum floor and for special events such as the launch of the 'Film 100' Celebration before Charles (then) Prince of Wales. I was personally invited to demonstrate a Magic Lantern performance at the 4th European Film Academy Awards held at 'Bablesburg Film Studios, Berlin' at which MOMI won a special award.  As a Magic Lanternist I have appeared several times on TV, as well as been an advisor and lending my collection for film and TV productions.  I have performed my Lantern show, 'Just a Song at Twilight' at 'Players Theatre' the 'British Museum' and at festivals from Buxton to Sevenoaks and at the "Moonshadow Festival' in 1999.  I gave a private demonstration of the Lantern for HM Princess Margaret.

I became the most senior actor working at MOMI, observing what styles of performance worked best in this environment, going on to train other actors.  I subsequently brought my ideas on 'Historical Interpreting' with me when I joined forces with Mark Wallis of 'Past Pleasures', bringing our style of performance to clients such as  English Heritage (Historic England), Historic Royal Palaces, National Trust, and major History Festivals, notably the Lancaster Legacy Festival. Having set up my own performance company 'Here Be Dragons', I became Artistic Director and writer of this Festival for several years.

In 2001 I devised and scripted and performed in an "Education Project" for Hatfield House, Hertfordshire, using Historical Interpretation to educate literally thousands of children who were brought to see us over the 15 years that I ran this project.  Along with my company of fellow 'Here be Dragons' performers I was twice awarded the "Full Sandford Award" for this project, with judges' comments including "To say the judges were impressed is an understatement...".

My historical interpretation of King Henry VIII has been regularly seen at Hampton Court Palace, Tower of London, Dover Castle, Leeds Castle, Eltham Palace, and other heritage venues and private and corporate events as well as TV.  Similarly, I have portrayed George IV/Prince Regent regularly at Brighton Royal Pavilion, and at events such as the "Waterloo Dispatches" before the Princess Royal.

I have work at many festivals celebrating persons and moments in history, such as portraying Archbishop Stephen Langton who wrote the "Magna Carta", at the official 800th anniversary celebrations at Runnymede.  In many different historical guises I have performed for various TV production companies (see TV section), and publicity and film shoots for magazines newspapers, and at numerous venues, the evidence for which you may see in the gallery below.
