Acting, Musicals and Opera
During the 1980’s I started to move away from my initial career as a print-buyer and designer to pursued my love of performance. I had been a founder member of groups such as Imperial Opera and the Imperial Male Voice Choir and had been a leading light in several major amateur companies, but I began to be offered professional performing work and eventually turned fully professional becoming a member of Equity in 1988 (number 120613). My vocal coach, Deborah Miles-Johnson, introduced me to the renown singing teacher Mdm. Eugenia Triguez-Campbell, protégée of Tetrazzini and Maggie Teyte, with whom I studied singing for several years.
My credits on the professional and pro-am stage range from Pantomime to Opera, notably in musical theatre including taking principal roles in nearly all the operettas of 'Gilbert and Sullivan'. Roles with various companies have included Macheath in Beggar’s Opera, Capt. Von Trapp in Sound of Music, the Devil in Dvorak’s The Devil and Kate, the eponymous Paul Bunyan in Briton’s opera, Falstaff in Vaughan-Williams’s Sir John in Love, Frank Maurrant in Kurt Weill’s Street Scene and Judge Turpin in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. Venues included The Battersea Arts Centre; The Fairfield Halls, Croydon; The Secombe Centre, Carshalton; Duke’s Theatre, Lancaster; Orchard Theatre, Dartford; Gaiety Theatre, Douglas; Alexandra Theatre, Bognor Regis; Buxton Music Festival; Sevenoaks ‘Three Arts’ Festival; other music festivals venues.
Other professional stage credits range from Pantomime, Music-Hall, and the concert and recital platform, and as a Master of Ceremonies and ‘Character Host’ for concerts and events. I have even worked as a Circus Ringmaster.
